1. Project Overview & Requirements
This project involves the expansion of an international airport in an African coastal country, designed to accommodate Boeing 777-300 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The prefabricated steel hangar features a 90-meter (295 ft) clear span, 156-meter length, and 30-meter height, allowing simultaneous parking of one wide-body and one narrow-body aircraft.
The facility includes maintenance areas, warehouse, workshop, offices, and supporting service spaces.
Due to the coastal environment, the structure must meet high anti-corrosion requirements.
2. Hangar Design & Engineering Solution
The hangar adopts a large-span steel structure system combining space frame and portal frame, with a glass curtain wall.
The column-free 90 m span maximizes usable space, ensuring full flexibility for aircraft maintenance and parking.
The hangar is equipped with a flexible hangar door system, utilizing high-speed rolling shutter doors. The guide rails are retractable, allowing them to be neatly stored when fully open. This design minimizes space occupation, improves operational efficiency, and is especially suitable for large aircraft access.
The structure is designed for a wind speed of 120 km/h (≈0.75 kN/m²), ensuring stability under harsh conditions.
To address corrosion, all steel components are hot-dip galvanized, achieving a service life of over 30 years. The roof uses aluminum-magnesium-manganese panels with 100 mm insulation.
Structural optimization reduces steel consumption to approximately 50 kg/m², balancing safety and cost.
All connections use high-strength bolts, improving installation efficiency and reducing on-site work.
3. Fabrication & Quality Assurance
The structure is fabricated using Q355B steel (equivalent to EN10025 S355JR / ASTM A572).
Fabrication tolerance is controlled within ±2 mm, ensuring accurate on-site assembly. Production includes laser cutting, automated welding, shot blasting, and hot-dip galvanizing (130 g/m²).
Each component undergoes strict inspection to ensure quality and traceability.
